 There have been Scandinavians in Lincolnshire dating back to the Viking invasions of the 9th century and many of the invaders settled here, as can been seen from the many Lincolnshire towns and villages which bear Scandinavian sounding names.
In the 1970’s some of the Scandinavians who lived in and around Lincoln got together and decided to try and revive some of the traditions of their homelands, and to give their children some idea of their heritage.
An informal Juletraesfest, to which Scandinavians throughout the county were invited, was held in Lincoln and this was so successful that it was decided to form a club where all interested Scandinavians could meet and get together, subsequently in February 1976 SKOL, (The Scandinavian Klubb of Lincolnshire) was founded.
The initial membership has since grown, with many of the children of the original members becoming members, as well as many of the increasing number of people from Scandinavia who seem to be moving to Lincolnshire
The uniqueness of SKOL is its policy of accepting as members only people with some family ties to Scandinavia.
SKOL maintains close links with the Danish Seamen’s Church in Hull, and is also a member of COSCAN (The Confederation of Scandinavian Societies of Great Britain and Ireland)
