MORTENS AFTEN plus andespill
This was held at The Admiral Rodney Hotel in Horncastle for the first time this year, and was enjoyed by 25 members and guests. The food was very good and all enjoyed the Andespil which followed. Some even took home a duck for their Christmas dinner.
Scandinavian Christmas Market
This was held at Skt. Nikolaj Seamen's Church in Hull the last weekend in November. As usual it was a very successful and enjoyable event. enjoyed by all who attended. In spite of the recession a healthy profit was made which will go some way towards helping the church through the next year.
Julebord
Held again at Nettleham Old School, this was held this year at lunchtime rather than evening, and was as enjoyable as always. The food was delicious, all the usual Danish smørgasbord delicacies were enjoyed by all, together with snaps and Carlsberg (though in deference to drink-driving laws) much nonalcoholic beer was also drank, it appeared to have little effect on the festive mood. Thanks are due to Dominique and Andy for arranging everything and for making a bare hall into a cosy dining room (very hyggely). Thanks are also due to Edith and her band of helpers for supplying a feast fit for a king.
Juletraesfest
Held again at Wragby Town Hall on the 27th December
the event was enjoyable though very disappointing in the number of members attending.
The only people who came were those who also actively contributed to setting the event up and their families.
This is not enough people to make a successful event and this may unfortunately be the last of these previously popular occassions, unless some more inr=terest can be shown from our younger members.
SKOL Birthday Party
This was again held st the home of our Chairman, Kari Moss Wright and attended by several members. as usual it was a very enjoyable and informal occassion.
THE FAMILY MIDSUMMER PARTY (CANCELLED)
Unfortunately this event had to be cancelled due to a lack of interest. The trial of moving it from a Sunday evening to a Friday was obviously not popular.
MISUMMER PARTY AT GOXHILL
This event as usual was well attended and enjoyed by all, especially as the weather was kinder this year.
SKOL Birthday Party
i have as yet received no etails of this event. Watch this space
Juletræsfest Sunday 28th December
at Wragby Town Hall
25 children, accommpanied by 30 adults(members and non-members) enjoyed a great afternon at Wragby Town hall, celebrating Christmas in a traditional Scandinavian way.
There was the singing of carols and Christmas songs around the juletræ, there were splendid refreshments, games for the children and the whole topped up by a visit from Julemanded who gave all the children a traditional Godeposer.
Everyone who came had an enjoyable,if sometimes boisterous, afternoon. Thanks must go to all who helped. Edith for organising it all, Peter Yarsley and family for the live music, lynn and Birger for supplying the tree, and Misse and Derek who ran the games.
Thanks too to all who turned up and helped to make it such an enjoyable occasion
Julebord Saturday 13th December
at Nettleham Old School Hall 7.30pm
28 members enjoyed an excellant night out at Nettleham .
Dominique, with assistance from Andy, turned the hall into a festive venue. Lights, candles and table settings, plus a few special Dominique artistic touched gave the hall a warm, comfortable feel, truly HYGGELIG !!
We were welcomed by a warming glass of Glogg, which helped us to forget the cold weather outside. We then sat down to a splendid Danish Julebord, prepared by Edith and her talented band of helpers. Good food, good company and akvavit and beer, what more can anyone want. A truly lovely evening.
So nice to see Monica and Richard Davies after so long, and their,
now grown-up,children.
The Scandinavian Christmas Market at the Danish Seamens Church in Hull
28th and 29th November
In spite of the credit crunch the Christmas Market was once again hugely successful, and the profits will go a long way towards maintaining the church and its programme for the coming year.
It was nice to see so many SKOL members attending, let's hope we can persuade more members to attand next year and help to even more profits.
2008-2009
Seal Watch at Donna Nook Saturday 23rd November
I was unable to attend this event, and have received no feed back from anyone who did, hence I cannot report on it. But I believe the atrocious weather spoilt what is normally a nice event.
I have heard that over 1300 pups were born this year, making Donna Nook the largest Seal breeding site in the UK.
Mortensaften : Friday 7th November 7.30pm
More than twenty members attended this event which was again held at
The Angel Inn, North Street, Horncastle where Swedish member Christina Ward welcomed us with a traditional Andesteg.
Roast Duck with red cabbage and candied potatoes, followed by ris alamande (A delicious creamed rice concoction with almonds and a hot cherry sauce, scrumptious)
The excellent meal was followed by the traditional playing of Andespil (Bingo with ducks as prizes).
Visit to Lincoln Cathedral : Saturday 4th October 11.00am
I was not able to go on this event, due to my being away, and I have yet to receive any information about how it went. I will update once I receive any information.
MIDSOMMER FEST .
Held once again at Lindum House, courtesy of Nils and Tracey, this again proved to be a popular occassion with both children and adults.
Good company, good food and decent weather, enhanced by an extremely incendiary bonfire, lit by Nils, helped the occasion to be a success.
Unfortunatel owing to Nils and Tracey moving to Sweden the future fate of this event is uncertain.
THE SKOL AGM SATURDAY 31ST MAY 2008 at 12.00hrs
Held on the site of the inaugural SKOL meeting at The Guildhall in Lincoln the usual people turned up for this important meeting.
The SKOL members were welcomed to the Guildhall by the Mayor,s Officer Joe Cook, who gave a short history of the Guildhall.
A letter of resignation from the committee was received from Edith Nash. Kari expressed her appreciation of the work and committment Edith had given to SKOL since its inception.
The chairman's report contained a brief history of SKOl and inception 32years ago.
Among other items mentioned were:
The news that DFDS was discontinuing its service to Norway and Sweden.
That Jo Noillson's idea to spresd the workload for individual events had worked well and substantially reduced the chairman's workload.
Ulrika Oscarsson had taken on the task of writing and distributing the Newsletter.
A report was given on the work of the commitee and COSCAN.
It was reported that arrangements for the next COSCAN conference in Iceland in April 209 were progressing.
Reports were received events held during the year.
The Chairman's report was unanimously approved.
The treasurer's report showed the club to be in a good financial position.
All the officers of the club, with the exception of Edith Nash, were re-elected.
Othger business included the announcement of a musical absed on Ibsen?? in London, the question of third party insurance and a motion that unpaid-up members be contacted by the treasurer.
The meetin was closed at 12.15
After the AGM members were shown the Civic Silver and Insignia, and were given a witty and informative talk by Joe Cook.
VALBORGSMÅSSOAFTEN SATURDAY 3RD MAY 2008 4.00PM
This new event on our calendar,a Swedish tradition welcoming theSpring, was held at Hartsholme Park. A good few people attended and we had a good time. Maria gave us a quiz which taught us a lot about Swedish traditions and Valborg in particular.
A picnic was held and games played. Unfortunately owing to park regulations it was not possible to have a bonfire. it was a lovely day and a welcome addition to our calendar, it is that hoped may be continued.
Hopefully more people with children will attend next year.
A FAMILY WALK SATURDAY 5TH APRIL @ 11.00HRS
The family walk took place at Whisby Nature Park.
It was not extremely well attended but those who made the effort had a good time in good weather. Especially the children who went.
These events which it was hoped to plan for 2008 unfortunately did not happen
CHEESE AND WINE, AND FILM EVENINGIN TEALBY
Shirley Holm Johannsen is trying to revive this old favourite after several years. It will be held in the Village Hall in Tealby. We look forward to it.
FILM EVENING This is being explored in conjunction with the Lincoln Film Society
CRAYFISH PART It is hoped that this is another old favourite that can be revived.
We need a committed Swedish member to arrange this for us.
2007-2008
JULETRÆSFEST
Only a few people bothered to attend this previously well supported and very enjoyable event, but those that did had an enjoyable afternoon with the traditional singing of julesange around the juletræ, the visit of julemanden and food and games.
Let us hope that apathy does not allow this traditional event to die.
JULEBORD
This was held at the home of Edith and Victor, about twenty people enjoyed a great evening with a very tasty danish smørgasbord, good beer and akvavit, and excellent company.
A pity none of our new members were able to come.
THE ANNUAL SCANDANAVIAN CHRISTMAS MARKET AT THE HULL SEAMENS CHURCH
As always this event, which is the only source of income for the Church, which is one of only two Danish Churches in England was very successful. Several SKOL members either helped at the market or spent lots of their money there. I think everyone must agree that it is well worth a visit, Christmas presents, candles and decorations can be purchased. The is Scandinavian baking and foods to be purchased and a great Danish Smorgasbord to be sampled. Put this very special event in your diary for next year, you won't regret it, It is always the last Friday and Saturday in November
MORTENSAFTEN FRIDAY 9TH NOVEMBER 2007
This event was extremely well attended, our largest number ever, and the guests included some of our friends from Hull, which was very nice.
Christina as always put on a superb meal for us, Andesteg followed by Ris alamande, which was almost ' as mother made it !'
A very enjoyable bingo session was held after this, in which three ducks were won, and during which the bingo caller was subjected to a barrage of, I feel unjust, barracking.
This continues to be one of our most successful and well attended events.
THE BI-ANNUAL COSCAN CONFERENCE
Seventeen SKOL members went to Stockholm in October to attend the bi-annual conference. For many of us it was our first visit to this lovely city, and, despite the pension breaking prices, had a great time. Kari had arranged for all the delegates to stay at a lovely hotel right in the centre of town. We had a very enjoyable cocktail party at the residence of the British Ambassador, the bubbly was free flowing, the canapes very tasty, the staff attentive and the Ambassador and his wife were charming, welcoming and very friendly, a good ambassador for Britain.
we had a wonderful conference dinner in one of the most famous restaurants in Stockholm, where we enjoyed traditional Swedish food, though most of us went easy on the drink (cost, not health)
The Gamla was delightful and the various city tours interesting and informative, especially the VASA Museum, which everyone was very impressed with.
All in all a great time was had by all the delegates.
Where next Kari ? Iceland !!!!!
HOSTFEST Friday 8th October 2007 @ The Seamen's Church, Hull
Several SKOL members attended this very popular evening at the Hull Seamen's Church.
The food was very good, the music lively and very good to dance to, and the company was great. We all had a very enjoyable evening. Make it a date on your calendar next year.
VISIT TO TATTERSHALL CASTLE Saturday 29th September 2007
This event was attended by about a dozen people in good weather, but it was cut short due to the painful discovery of a wasps' nest by some of the children. The wasps were particularly aggressive and this resulted in several of the children, and some of the parents, being badly stung. Fortunately no lasting harm appears to have been done. It is to be sincerely hoped that this unpleasant experience will not deter future such enterprises.
It helps us to remember that wild life really is sometimes, wild.
At a special presentation held at the Royal Norwegian Embassy ssy in London, our Chairman,
Kari Moss Wright, received the Medal of The Order of St. Olav from the hands of the Norwegian Ambassador to London, HE Bjarne Lindstrøm.
Kari received the medal for her distinguished work towards Anglo-Norwegian relations, especially for her work with Co-Scan and SKOL.
Kari invited several friends and colleagues to help her celebrate this event.

Kari, The Ambassador and the Medal
The 31st SKOL Birthday Party
This was due to have been held at Kari and Peter's home in Canwick but unfortunately had to be called off at the last moment due to Kari being poorly.
I am pleased to say that she appears to have recovered now.
'THE VIKINGS' at The Collection in Lincoln.
Unfortunately only a few of our members chose this opportunity to visit this exhibition, but those that did, especially the chidren, had a great time.
If you have never been to The Collection, which includes The Usher Gallery then I urge you to do so. The building itself is an award winning design and worth seeing for itself; There is a fascinating permanent exhibition on Lincolnshire Past and Present, and there is always at lease one visiting exhibition. All this plus the superb paintings and collections at The Usher Gallery.
It is well worth a visit.
FASTELAVN at Hull Seamen's Church
I have so far received no feedback on this event, or if any of our members atteded.
JULETRAESFEST
A usual this event was very enjoyable and very well attended.
Over 50 Children and Adults attended this traditional Scandinavian Christmas event at Wragby Town Hall, where they enjoyed plenty of food and drink. besides the traditional singing around the Juletrae.
Julemanden made his annual appearence, bringing a present for all the children.
A good time was had by al;l and it is so good that this event, which was also the first ever event held by SKOL over 30 years ago, continues to be the best attended event of the year.

Some of the guests enjoying themselves The musicians
dancing around the Juletræ

Julemand with one of the older 'children'
JULEBORD
As usual this event was extremely enjoyable, with excellent food, plenty to drink and good company.
Our thanks to Susanne and Tim for use of their house as our venue for this event
THE CHRISTMAS MARKET at The Hull Seamen's Church
This again was very successful and popular.
The crowds were large and generous, and a lot of money was raised for the Church.
Local Television featured the event prominently which helped swell the attendence, and the fact that it is one of the Mayor of Hull's charities for the year can have done it no harm either. The Mayor opened the Market.
MORTENSAFTEN
This event was once again held at The Angel Inn in Horncastle where it was attended by over 20 members and guests, who once again enjoyed a traditional roast duck meal with all the traditional trimmings, followed by ris alamande.
The evening was completed as usual by the guests playing bingo for a prizes of ducks.
A hugely enjoyable and successful evening.

A Visit to Waters Edge Country Park - 23rd September 2006
A Visit to "The Collection" in Lincoln - 7th October 2006
Both events were enjoyed by the few members who turned up. These were unfortunately very few, which was a shame.
Waters Edge is a beautiful place, built on land reclaimed from a polluted chemical factory site, it is full of wildlife life and vegetation, has some lovely walks, and also has a innovative Visitors’ Centre, which should be of great interest to children young and old, telling as it does about the nature and history of the Humber.
The Collection is a new, modern museum in Lincoln attached to the Usher gallery. It's permanent exhibition gives a great insight into the History of Lincolnshire from the Stone Age onwards, and is a great place to take children as many of the exhibits are interactive. The visiting exhibitions are normally interesting and often thought-provoking.
Hostfest - 13th October 2006
Several members enjoyed a lovely evening at the Hostfest at the Seamens’ Church in Hull. They enjoyed superb food, a good jazz band and dancin
